Deals and steals at jazz festival

- CAM FULLER

More than 65 free shows have been announced for this year’s SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival, including a large roster of Saskatchewan talent such as Jack Semple, Denise Valle, Parab Poet & the Hip Hop Hippies, The Steadies, Tatrina Tai and Rugged Little Thing.

National and international acts will also play, including New York’s Red Baraat and Toronto’s The Slocan Ramblers.

The Nutrien Free Stage will be in the same location as last year, at Kiwanis Park North. Other free venues include the Restaurant Series (6Twelve, Drift Sidewalk Cafe and Vista Lounge, 2nd Avenue Grill, The James Hotel, Finn’s Irish Pub), the Bessborough’s After Dark series and pop-up shows sponsored by DTN YXE. The full schedule is now available at saskjazz.com/lineup.

In other jazzfest news, the festival app goes live Thursday.

New this year is the opportunity to buy tickets in advance for the Groove Series (not just at the door) at the Capitol and Amigo’s.

“As exciting as big shows like The Flaming Lips, Tom Cochrane, Ben Harper & Charlie Musselwhite, City and Colour, and Dee Dee Bridgewater are, the many free shows featuring musical gems such as Jack Semple, Red Baraat, Oral Fuentes Reggae Band, Tatrina Tai, The Steadies, Heidi Munro & the Real Groovy Band and hundreds more local musicians, showcase the tremendous talent we have right here in Saskatchewan,” artistic director Kevin Tobin said.
