Huskies stay unbeaten with wild win in Manitoba

Two unbeaten football teams remain in Canada West — one of them the University of Saskatchew­an Huskies — and it sets the stage for an intriguing clash this coming Friday at Griffiths Stadium.

The Huskies improved to 2-0 Friday night with a 48-46 victory over the host Manitoba Bisons. while the Calgary Dinos thrashed the British Columbia Thunderbir­ds 57-7.

Saskatchew­an and Calgary sit atop the conference with 2-0 records, and they will meet Friday in Saskatoon at Griffiths Stadium.

Payton Hall’s 90-yard intercepti­on return for a touchdown with 3:08 left in the game gave the Huskies a 48-37 lead, and they held off a Bisons’ charge down the stretch. Manitoba got a Brad Mikoluff field goal and a nine-yard pass reception from Dylan Schrot, but couldn’t find enough points to catch up.

Colton Klassen scored three touchdowns for the Huskies, on catches of 20 and 18 yards, and on a five-yard run. He finished with seven receptions for 98 yards.

Huskies’ tailback Tyler Chow carried 18 times for 134 yards and a touchdown in a winning cause, while adding four catches for 28 yards and another major.

Saskatchew­an quarterbac­k Kyle Siemens hit 24 of 35 passes for 306 yards, four touchdowns and an intercepti­on. His Manitoba counterpar­t, Des Catellier, completed 33 of 48 for 425 yards, four touchdowns and three intercepti­ons.

Saskatchew­an’s other touchdown came from Joey Trumpy on a 17-yard reception. Sean Stenger added field goals of 29 and 10 yards.

The University of Saskatchew­an ■ Huskies women’s soccer team played to a pair of ties in front of a home crowd in their opening weekend of the Canada West season.

On Saturday, Maya Gabruch and Hannah Gannitsos-cla scored in the first half to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen.

Winnipeg fought back in the second half with a pair of unanswered owngoalsto­tiethegame­at2-2.

Taking on the University of Manitoba Bisons on Sunday, Saskatchew­an’s Cassidy Hayward scored in the 68th minute to put the Huskies up 1-0. Bisons’ Bruna Mavignier scored in the 90th minute to force the tie.
