Greatfoodand achancetowin a dream vacation have Canadians celebrating 20 years of OPA!

- TIFFANY MAYER

For the past 20 years, OPA! of Greece has given Canadians a taste of the Mediterranean here at home. Now the popular quick-serve Greek restaurant chain wants its customers to experience more of those flavours — and have a chance to visit the place that’s inspired every pita wrap served on this side of the Atlantic.

To celebrate two decades of doing what Greeks are famous for — feeding people — OPA! has added a twist to their existing gyro wrap offering. The traditional gyro pita wrap meal made its debut throughout their 90-plus Canadian locations on Aug. 30, channelling the street food culture that’s so much a part of Greece’s social fabric.

The traditional gyro pita wrap meal will be served the traditional way, with juicy slices of verticalrotisserie-cooked beef and lamb.

They’ll be wrapped in a pita stuffed with french fries, like on the streets of Athens, and the ultra-fresh tomatoes, red onions, feta cheese and tzatziki that are OPA!’s trademark toppings.

“Pita wraps are common street fare in Greece,” says Mickella Lycka, OPA!’s supply chain manager. “In Greece, street food is a part of the social culture. The warm climate and very social nature of Greeks — and the universal ritual of gathering friends and family to share meals and connect — make street food a great casual option.”

OPA! is also giving its diners the chance to win a trip for two to Greece to taste the culinary muses that have made the popular eateries the perennial favourites of Canadians.

Every purchase of a traditional gyro pita wrap meal or one of six other menu items, including souvlaki and salad, and the OPA! platter, gives customers the opportunity to enter to win the 10-day trip of a lifetime.

They also can scratch and instantly win one of more than 93,000 food prizes, including Olympus bowls, pita wraps, beverages, fries and baklava. Every ticket has two chances to win.

“Our 20th anniversary is a big event and an opportunity to celebrate our success with everyone, so we’re thanking our customers with a unique offering and chance to win something very special,” says Mike MacDonald, OPA!’s marketing director. “It’s giving a taste of traditional Greece, and the chance to go to Greece to experience not only the food but the warm Greek culture as well.”

The 10-day grand prize holiday trip features stays in the country’s most stunning and picturesque locales: Mykonos, Santorini and Athens. The itinerary features cooking classes, wine tastings, tours of the Acropolis and pink sand beaches that would make anyone feel as though they’re walking through a postcard. The trip winner also receives a $500 Visa gift card and a $500 OPA! gift card.

“Greece is such a incredibly beautiful place to visit,” MacDonald says. “When we sat down to plan the trip to give away, the properties we’ve selected are really the locations and hotel properties we all wish we could afford to go to — it truly is a five-star dream vacation of a lifetime!”

“Our customers are the key to our success,” says CEO Dorrie Karras. “We wanted our 20th anniversary to celebrate them and to use it as an opportunity to go back to our roots. How much more authentically Greek can you get than a trip to Greece? Our authentic gyro pita wrap is another opportunity for our customers to experience a little piece of Greece right here at home. Twenty years is a big deal, and a big prize is the least we can offer the people who loyally supported OPA!”

OUR CUSTOMERS ARE KEY TO OUR SUCCESS. WE WANTED TO CELEBRATE THEM AND TO USE IT AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO BACK TO OUR ROOTS.
