Salvation Army’s important work needs our support

We’re glad Santa relies on elves and elbow grease to get his work done, and not all that newfangled technology.

A temporary problem with our Excel system here at the Starphoenix on Tuesday caused a few headaches, including a delay in processing some of the Sporting Christmas donations we’ve received. They’re here, but couldn’t be formally logged by the time our presses started rolling.

Enough gifts and notes landed on my desk, however, to provide another update, with the rest to follow — so if you donated within the last few days but don’t see it

here, don’t worry. We’ll catch up quickly.

In the meantime, Murray Alberts writes to remind us of a

good sport he knew. “My contribution is in memory of Lloyd Weyland, who passed away far too early at the age of 61,” writes Murray. “He had a great love for sports that included broomball, football and baseball. He volunteered a great deal of his time to the community as a coach and umpire, teaching martial arts and as a president of the Humboldt Broncos. He was a great ambassador for Humboldt and district.”

Parents, siblings and friends are all remembered today. Among them is Broncos captain Logan Schatz, who died in the April 6 bus crash.

Our annual Sporting Christmas fund, which has moved past a fourth decade, raises money for the Salvation Army’s Christmas hamper program. Everything we receive goes straight to the Sally Ann, for the meaningful work it does with area families who need some Christmas-time assistance.

If you have the resources — whether large or small — to help the Salvation Army, we make it easy to jump to their aid.

You can give on the web (where we also archive our regular updates), at thestarphoenix. com/sportingchristmas

If you find yourself downtown and want to stop by the Starphoenix office (204 Fifth Ave. N.), you can leave your donation at the front desk before noon (when it closes for the day), or in the slot inside the front doors.

We’re always glad to receive mail. You can send your donation to:
