South won dummy's ace to continue with the spade three for the five and queen on which West discarded a diamond. The jack of hearts was passed to the king as East switched to a fourth best club for partner's ace. East won the club return with the king and followed with the jack, tapping dummy, where his trump winner set the contract, N-S 50.

The cruel 4-0 trump division, in addition to the heart king offside, had doomed the game. North's boost to game was a good plan rather than responding 2NT to gain more information regarding partner's weak two-bid. The major suit game was likely to be a lock.

Deep Finesse states that South can make four spades but it is looking at all hands. South could emerge with ten tricks by playing East for four spades where a trump coup would erase East's trump winner. Declarer would be compelled to play the cards in the right sequence which is much easier when you can see East's hand. 3NT would be successful when the defense plays four rounds of clubs as long as North begins spades with the king. The 4-0 division will not be an problem since two finesses will bring home the suit.
