Big-hearted donors give Sporting Christmas a boost

- KEVIN MITCHELL

Few things say “Christmas” like some good, nostalgic music of the season, and the Orpheus 60 Chorus does that in spades.

When you throw Sporting Christmas into the mix, well, not even Bing Crosby can top that.

“Our sport is singing,” writes Julie Janzen. “We perform every Thursday afternoon, September to May, at a seniors residence or nursing home in Saskatoon.”

And each year, Julie tells us, the Orpheus 60 Chorus presents a free Christmas concert, and offers the chance for people to provide a voluntary donation. We’re honoured to be a recipient, again, of the generosity shown by the Chorus and their listeners.

Sporting Christmas helps the Salvation Army with its Christmas hamper program, and we get an anonymous gift every year from a certain good-hearted person whose donation provides countless happy memories for many, many, many people in this area.

This year, that donor wishes to remember his brother. Thanks for the gift, and for the many families it will affect in a very good way.

The Saskatoon Community Contact for the Widowed collected money this fall for Sporting Christmas, and they’ve passed it our way.

“We have collected yearly since 2001,” writes Bev Kinshella, “and we know that the funds are going to help people in need in our community.”

Greg Hutchings remembers “Russ, Del, Phil and Myles. They left us far too soon.”

Ruth and Stan Rendall donate in memory of daughter Lisa Rendall, who is well-known for her radio work in this city and her courageous battle with cancer.

“Christmas was her favourite time of the year,” they write.

It’s always good to hear from the Senators and Senatorettes, who come to our aid every season, and from everybody whose donation is listed below.
