Kozun named Canada West male first star

Setting new records and winning back-to-back games has earned Taran Kozun Canada West male first start of the week honours.

Kozun, goaltender for the University of Saskatchew­an men’s hockey team, broke the Canada West record for longest consecutiv­e regular season shutout streak, totalling a time of 267:32 minutes over five games.

On Friday, the Nipawin native picked up his fifth shutout of the season, which also set a new Canada West record, making 14 saves in a 1-0 double overtime victory against the Mount Royal University Cougars.

His shutout streak came to an end on Saturday, however, when the Cougars managed to sneak one by with 4:02 remaining in the third period. Kozun made 25 of 26 saves in the game to help the Huskies to a 6-1 win.

Three University of Saskatchew­an teams remained at the same rank as last week, while two teams dropped in this week’s U Sports Top-10 polls.

On the women’s side, the track and field team earned 97 points and the wrestling team earned 38 to both hold steady at the No. 2 position in their respective polls, while the women’s basketball team dropped from the No. 2 spot to the No. 5 spot, earning 370 points.

Meanwhile, in the men’s polls, the hockey team stayed in the No. 3 spot with 247 points, while the wrestling team dropped one spot to sixth with 35 points.

JACOBSON WINS OPENING DRAW AT TANKARD

Action is underway at the Sasktel Tankard in Whitewood as the competitio­n’s first draws were played on Wednesday.

Saskatoon’s Jason Jacobson started off on the right foot, claiming a 10-9 victory over Fox Valley’s Ryan Deis in the opening draw.

The opening draw didn’t go as well for Saskatoon’s Rylan Kleiter as he lost 8-6 to Kerrobert’s Joshua Heidt.

Three other Saskatoon teams — Kody Hartung, Dustin Kalthoff and Kirk Muyres — all got their first taste of action in the Tankard’s second draw, which was played late on Wednesday. Those results were still underway at press time.

Thursday’s schedule has Draw 3 at 9 a.m., Draw 4 at 3 p.m. and Draw 5 at 7 p.m.
