BEAT THE WINTER BLAHS

We can’t leave February behind fast enough. Let’s look ahead to spring and the assurance of fresh potholes and the return of robins. Until then, let’s have some fun. Here are five ideas for this weekend:

Huskie Athletics is a good stop, as the men’s hockey team opens its title run against the dreaded Golden Bears of Alberta. Game time Friday and Saturday is 7 p.m. at Merlis Belsher Place. If it goes to a Game 3, that would be Sunday night at 7. The women’s basketball team plays Friday night, also at the PAC. Game time against the Regina Cougars at this winner-take-all conference title game is 7 p.m.

If you’re looking for a way to beat the winter blahs, the Saskatoon Blues Festival could prove to be the right elixir for you. Venues around the city will have an assortment of musicians providing top-notch entertainm­ent.

Another surefire way to leave winter behind is by visiting the annual Saskatoon Wildlife Federation Sports and Leisure Show at Prairielan­d Park. A large assortment of sporting goods, RVS, boats and many other things will get your mind on summer fun. Look at the show as a way to escape the Saskatchew­an winter. Show times are 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Fans of Pink Floyd may want to head to the Broadway Theatre on Sunday night for a performanc­e by Pigs: Canada’s Pink Floyd. The music of Roger Waters, David Gilmour and company will be on display from this talented tribute band. Showtime is 7:30.

Finally, with the thermomete­r rising higher, perhaps this is a good weekend to reacquaint yourself with the outdoors. Head downtown to skate, grab some cross-country skis and find a trail, or simply get out and walk along the riverbank. You can almost feel spring arriving.
