Stars edge Rebels to hoist Fedoruk Cup

The Saskatoon Stars are Fedoruk Cup champions for fourth time in the last five seasons after a 3-2 win over the Regina Rebels on Tuesday night at Merlis Belsher Place.

The Stars, who play in the Saskatchew­an Female Midget AAA Hockey League, swept the bestof-five final series.

Anna Leschyshyn got the scoring going for the Stars just nine seconds into the second period. But just 29 seconds after that, Regina’s Neena Brick connected to tie the game.

Grace Shirley restored Saskatoon’s lead and Kaitlin Jockims provided some insurance.

Samantha Sichkaruk closed out the scoring for the Rebels.

Saskatoon goalie Arden Kliewer stopped 18 of 20 shots for the win and 70 of 74 shots in the series.

The Stars will now host the Manitoba champion Westman Wildcats in the Esso West Regionals. The best-of-three series will begin in Saskatoon on April 5.

BLAZER, HOUNDS DEADLOCKED IN FINAL

The Saskatoon Blazers were poised to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League final before the Notre Dame Hounds tied the series 1-1 with a 3-2 double overtime win in Game 2 on Monday in Wilcox.

Will Lavigne scored the winner at the 10:16 mark of the second overtime period.

The Blazers hosted the Hounds on Wednesday in Game 3. Results weren’t available at press time.

HUSKIES UNVEIL FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

The University of Saskatchew­an Huskies will open their 2019 Canada West football season on Aug. 30 in Winnipeg against the Manitoba Bisons.

Other schedule highlights include the Huskies’ home opener on Sept. 6 against the UBC Thunderbir­ds and a rematch of last year’s Hardy Cup final on Sept. 27 when the Huskies entertain the Calgary Dinos.

The Huskies close out the regular season on Oct. 26 when they host the Alberta Golden Bears.

The Hardy Cup semifinals are set for Nov. 2 with the 83rd Hardy Cup champion to be crowned on Nov. 9.
