Sask Sport hands out hardware to top athletes, coaches
Saskatchewan athletes, who made their mark both on land and water were recognized Thursday by Sask Sport.
They handed out six athlete-of-the-year awards, while also recognizing coaches, officials and volunteers.
Award winners were:
Youth Female: Savannah Sutherland, Borden, athletics — Highlights include three gold, one silver and one bronze at Canadian Legion National Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Youth Male: Daniel Mccullough, Saskatoon, kayaking — Canada’s top-ranked under-16 male kayaker won gold, silver and bronze at national sprint championships. Female: Shelby Newkirk, Saskatoon, para swimming — 2018 national para swimmer of the year, and world-record holder, won numerous medals on the national and international scene this past year. Male: Kurt Oatway, Regina, para alpine skiing — Highlights included gold in Super G at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in South Korea.
Master: Ted Rowan, Martensville, athletics — Won two gold, two silver in 85 to 89 category at the World Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championship, and also captured four golds at Canadians. Team: Team Sask Under-19 Women, Regina, water polo — Captured junior national gold medal, the first Saskatchewan team to do so. On the coaching and volunteer front, awards went to: Coach of the year: Tom Sargeant, Saskatoon Hilltops football team Female coach dedication award: Andrea Wolf, Wapella, softball Male coach dedication award: Kaspar Wirz, Saskatoon, para nordic skiing, and Udo Baeker, Regina, soccer.
Female official award: Loretta Lyons, Outlook, athletics
Male official award: Al Theede, Saskatoon, cross-country skiing Volunteer award: Derek Rope, Saskatoon, athletics, and Richard Smith, Fort Qu’appelle, golf
