U of Saskatchew­an salutes its Huskies

And the nominees are ...

That’s right, it’s that time of year again. The Huskie Salute awards night — held annually for the University of Saskatchew­an Huskies’ student athletes — takes place Friday night in Centennial Hall at TCU Place.

The Huskie Athletics’ “Major 7 Awards” are presented annually to athletes who have had outstandin­g seasons for the green and white, as well as made big contributi­ons on the field, in the classroom and in the community during their time with the Huskies.

Doors open for Huskie Salute at 5 p.m. Program begins at 6 p.m.

Here’s a list of award finalists:

FEMALE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

(Patricia Lawson Trophy)

Ashley de Sousa Martins (basketball) — A member of the Canada West all-rookie team who started 11 games as a rookie.

Mandi Fraser (volleyball) —

Member of the Canada West all-rookie team and third on the team in blocks per set.

Payton Izsak (soccer) — Led the

Huskies in goals and points and was named to the Canada West all-rookie team.

Nicole Ostertag (track and field)

— U Sports and Canada West bronze medallist.

MALE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

(Howard Nixon Trophy)

Nikolas Baikas (soccer) — Baikas, who led the Huskies with 10 points, was named both a Canada West second-team all-star and U Sports all-rookie.

Gordie Ballhorn (hockey) — First among Canada West rookie defencemen with 12 points and a member of the Canada West rookie team.

Alexander Dewar ( basketball) —

Member of the Canada West rookie team and fifth on the Huskies with 9.9 points per game.

Logan Sloan (wrestling) — Canada West and U Sports national rookie of the year as well as conference and national gold medallist.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

(Mary Ethel Cartwright Trophy)

Sabine Dukate (basketball) — Canada West player of the year and U Sports first team all-canadian.

Courtney Hufsmith (Cross Country) — Dominated cross country circuit and finished third in the Canada West.

Julianne Labach (track & field) — U Sports track athlete of the year won four Canada West medals and three U Sports medals at nationals.

Alexandra Schell (wrestling) — Canada West and U SPORTS champion for the second straight year.

MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

(E. Kent Phillips Trophy)

Tyler Chow (football) — U Sports first team all-canadian and Canada West leading rusher.

Kieran Johnston (track and field) — Canada West and U Sports heptathlon champion.

Taran Kozun (hockey) — U

Sports goaltender of the year and holder of four new Canada West records.

Logan Sloan (wrestling) — Canada West and U Sports rookie of the year as well as conference and national gold medallist.

ALL-AROUND MALE ATHLETE

(Rusty Mcdonald Trophy for academic, athletic and community achievemen­t)

Joseph Barker (basketball) — An all-academic, Canada West third team all-star and an inspiratio­nal leader and force in the paint.

Colin Fraser (volleyball) — Canada West all-star and all-academic who sits fourth in the Huskie record book for kills.

Kyle Siemens (football) — Second-leading passer in Huskie history, an all-academic and leader on the team.

ALL-AROUND FEMALE ATHLETE

(Valerie Girsberger Trophy for academic, athletic and community achievemen­t)

Megan Ahlstrom (basketball)

— An all-academic, leader on the team and dedicated volunteer.

Julianne Labach (track and field) — U Sports and Canada West champion, an all-academic and U Sports major award winner.

COACH OF THE YEAR

(Colb Mcewon trophy)

Dave Adolph (hockey) — Canada

West coach of the year after an alltime program-best 25 wins during the regular season.

Scott Flory (football) — Capturing the first Hardy Cup for the Huskies since 2006.

Daniel Olver (wrestling ) — Canada West and U sports women’s coach of the year.

Jason Reindl (track and field) —

Led U of S track and field teams to their first Canada West sweep since 2004.

Lisa Thomaidis (basketball) —

Helped Huskies capture a third Canada West title in the past four seasons.
