Fisker planning a sport utility e-vehicle

- NICHOLAS MARONESE

Electric automaker Fisker plans to take on its old rival Tesla with a battery-driven SUV priced starting at US$40,000. The unnamed SUV, to be launched in the second half of 2021, will aim for a range of 480 kilometres, and will be just the first in a line of three affordable luxury EVS from the company.

Fisker says propulsion will come from a pair of electric motors driving all four wheels, fed by an 80-kwh-plus lithium-ion battery pack. Designer Henrik Fisker says the goal with the exterior styling was muscular meets elegant. Inside, the driver will face a large head-up display as well as an “intuitive” interface.

Fisker also refers to “an extended open-air atmosphere” being made possible at the touch of a button, suggesting some sort of wide-opening sunroof.

Like Tesla, the company will use a direct-to-consumer approach, handled via a type of concierge service. After the SUV’S debut, Fisker plans to launch its flagship luxury sedan, the Emotion, which will preview the company’s Fisker solid-state battery technology.

“Our team of scientists have been working tirelessly within our in-house labs, with remarkable results to date as we move toward vehicle testing with partners next year,” Henrik Fisker said.

The Emotion will roll on 24-inch wheels, offer 640 km of battery range and will come packed with the hardware to enable Level 4 autonomous driving. Its price will be closer to US$130,000.
