SPCA lowers adoption fees for cats and kittens in November

- ERIN PETROW

If anyone is thinking about adopting a new cat or kitten, now is the perfect time.

Throughout the month of November, the Saskatoon SPCA hopes to free up some space on its adoption floor by significantly reducing the adoption fees for cats and kittens.

Adult cats — whose regular adoption fee is $85 — will cost $25; the fee for kittens has been slashed to $50 from $200.

“With the nights getting colder and winter on its way, there is an urgent need to provide safe shelter to stray felines in our community,” acting executive director Marv Le Nabat said in a statement. “But we need to make room for them, as we have more coming in every day.”

Currently, the shelter is housing 175 cats; 40 are already out on the adoption floor looking for their forever homes.

The SPCA regularly sees a surge in its cat population as the weather grows colder because cats that haven’t been spayed or neutered roam the city and give birth to litters of kittens that are then brought to the SPCA by owners who can’t care for them or by people who find them abandoned.

The lower fees include a health assessment, vaccinations and spaying or neutering surgery. Le Nabat noted that because the fees are so low, the SPCA will be required to offset the money lost through additional fundraising, so anyone who wants to help the cats but can’t adopt one can instead make donations of money or wet cat and kitten food, which are sorely needed and highly appreciated.

“Our priority is always to find suitable adopters for each individual cat based on their unique personality and to find responsible pet owners who are able to open their homes to a feline in need,” Le Nabat said.
