Victories advance Crusaders, Saints to provincial football finals

The Holy Cross Crusaders will battle the Regina Leboldus Golden Suns in the 6A provincial football final next weekend, while the Bishop James Mahoney Saints will take on Yorkton Regional in the 5A final.

Holy Cross earned their place in the provincial final after defeating the St. Joseph Guardians 33-9 on Friday night in the Saskatoon 6A city final, with quarterbac­k Tilawa Mudasia completing 13 of 19 passes for 148 and two touchdowns, both of which were made to Daniel Wiebe.

In the 5A provincial semifinal the Saints won 14-2 over the Balgonie Greenall Griffins on Saturday.

Bishop James Mahoney ’s Ethan Cook picked up the lone offensive touchdown of the game on a 64yard pass from Griffen Sander, while his teammate Maximus Litzenberg­er earned the other major with a 69-yard intercepti­on return.

Also on Friday, the Aden Bowman Bears defeated Prince Albert St. Mary 38-28 in the Division 2 city final.

Joe Yausie led the Bears with 21 carries for 252 yards and three touchdowns.

HUSKIES SOCCER TEAM FINISHES FOURTH IN CANADA WEST

The season officially came to an end for the University of Saskatchew­an Huskies men’s soccer team on Saturday as the team lost 3-1 to the Mount Royal Cougars in the bronze medal game of the Canada West championsh­ip in Vancouver.

Mason Okoge had the lone goal for the Huskies in that game.

On Friday, Saskatchew­an lost the semifinal match 2-0 to the host UBC Thunderbir­ds to drop them to the third-place game.

Both basketball Huskies teams opened their respective Canada West seasons with sweeps of the host Brandon University Bobcats.

On the men’s side, Saskatchew­an won 94-81 on Friday and 8775 on Saturday, while the women claimed a dominant 78-21 victory on Friday and followed it up with a 99-41 win on Saturday.

Travelling to Vancouver, the men’s hockey dogs also swept their series, earning a 4-0 shutout against the Thunderbir­ds on Friday and picking up 4-3 overtime win on Saturday.

Competing in a front of a hometown crowd, the women’s hockey team lost 3-2 in overtime to UBC on Friday and was shut out 1-0 on Saturday.

In volleyball, both Huskies teams hosted the Bobcats, but the two teams had opposite results.

The women’s team won in three straight sets on both Friday and Saturday, while the men’s team lost 3-1 on Friday and 3-0 on Saturday.
