SAYING GOODBYE TO THE DECADE
The final musical notes of the season serve as a fine sendoff with some superb sounds
As we approach the end of 2019 and, of course, the end of the decade, it’s as good a time as any to reflect a little bit on the music we’ve had the chance to hear in the last decade.
Saskatoon has proven itself to be a bastion for good and varied music, despite the general and overarching idea that we’re a little isolated in the middle of the country, a stopgap for bands touring from Vancouver to Toronto or vice versa.
But think of who we have coming out of the city and in the province: Reignwolf, Tenille Arts, One Bad Son, The Dead South, The Sheepdogs, Jess Moskaluke, Megan Nash, Colter Wall, and the list goes on and on.
So for the music that’s coming and for the music that’s going, here’s to another decade of great song in Saskatchewan.
RAH RAH
When: Friday, Dec. 27
Where: Amigos Cantina
What: After a hiatus, Rah Rah is going out with one last hurrah. The Regina-based indie band has certainly made a name for itself over the years, earning
Juno Award and Polaris Prize nominations while making four outstanding albums. But all good things must come to an end, and Rah Rah is doing a Saskatoon and a Regina “tour” as a final goodbye. They’ll be sorely missed, but at least there is a last opportunity to catch them live before we’re left with only albums. And if you want to find out more about them, there’s a beautiful feature by Regina Leader-post writer
Ashley Martin that tells a lot more of the story.
WINTER FANTASY: A HOLIDAY CONCERT
When: Friday, Dec. 27
Where: St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church
What: It’s a little different, but it’s going to be a concert jam-packed with so much (homegrown) talent that it just had to be mentioned.
The event features the stylings of brilliant local violinists Ryan Davis and Sam Milner, pianist Godwin Friesen, SSO cellist Scott Mcknight, and guest violin player Byungchan Lee.
Lee will be playing a 150-yearold violin on his sojourn to Saskatoon for a few holiday concerts with friends. Not too often that you’re going to hear something like that in the city.
HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
When: Dec. 29
Where: Knox United Church What: It might be post-christmas Day, but it’s still definitely a holiday concert.
This Saskatoon Opera benefit concert brings together the best of the best for Saskatoon opera singers for a night of beautiful music.
Some live in Saskatoon, some no longer do, but this is still a late December night to celebrate their talents.
