Bear spray discharged at plaza, girl charged

A 13-year-old girl is facing assault charges after bear spray was discharged during an incident at Midtown Plaza. Saskatoon police responded to the mall in downtown Saskatoon on Saturday around 5:30 p.m. after a report of an unknown substance in the air. According to police in a news release, the teenage girl and three other males “had been involved in an altercatio­n with an unknown male.” During the incident, one of the male suspects discharged bear spray at the unknown male. The three male suspects and the male victim fled the scene prior to officers arriving, police said. The girl was taken into custody and charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, administer­ing a noxious substance and two counts of assault. According to police, those involved were known to each other and the incident was not random. Saskatoon fire crews and paramedics responded to the scene, both to decontamin­ate the scene and offer medical services. According to police, no members of the public were injured.
