RECORD NUMBER OF HOMICIDES
The long-standing record of 11 homicides, set in 1979, was broken by the 2018 record of 13. At the end of that year, nine homicides had been recorded, but four fentanyl-related deaths that resulted in manslaughter charges were reclassified by police in 2019. For 2019, charges have been laid in 13 of the 16 cases registered in Saskatoon, as Thia James reports.
TAMMY BROWN, 39
Date of death: Jan. 29
Location: Kootenay Drive
The family of Tammy Brown told The Starphoenix in January they were devastated by the loss of the mother of two. Her death was recorded as the first homicide of 2018.
Charges: Brown’s partner, Blake Jeffrey Schreiner, 37, is charged with second-degree murder.
MARK ENWAYA, 31

Avenue Q South
Mark Enwaya was found shot to death in an alley. His mother and sister told The Starphoenix in March that he had just left a shift at work. Enwaya had come to Canada in 2012 from Iraq. Charges: Two boys, ages 15 and 17, are charged with seconddegree murder in his death.
They cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The Crown plans to seek adult sentences for both teens if they are convicted.
ROBIN GODFREY, 32

Avenue K South
Robin Godfrey was found with gunshot injuries in a courtyard of an apartment complex. He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Charges: Jamie Terrence Halkett, 27, is charged with seconddegree murder. At the time of the homicide, Halkett was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for breach of parole.
DANIEL MORRISON, 36
Date of death: May 27
Location: Near the 800 block of Spadina Crescent East
Daniel Morrison was found injured under a pedestrian bridge on the Meewasin Trail. He was discovered by a person walking along the trail, who alerted police. He was taken to hospital, where he died.
Charges: As of Dec. 10, no charges have been laid.
GERRY GRIMARD, 60
Date of death: June 24

Hopkins Street
Police found Grimard dead when they responded to a report of an injured man.
Charges: A 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been charged with first-degree murder. The Crown plans to seek an adult sentence if the teen pleads or is found guilty.
GABRIEL WAPASS, 47
Date of death: June 30
Location: 1700 block of 20th Street West
Police and ambulance staff responded to the area around St. Paul’s Hospital early in the morning of June 30 and tried to save Gabriel Wapass. They were unable to revive him.
Charges: Xavier Justice Jimmy, 21, is charged with seconddegree murder. Police have said they do not believe the two men knew each other.
NOREEN MOORE, 52

Avenue V South
Police found Noreen Moore dead in an apartment when officers went there to do a welfare check. Days earlier, she posted on social media that she was concerned about her son.
Charges: Moore’s son, Trent Ty Moore, 32, of Moose Jaw, is charged with second-degree murder.
MAURICIO ARRIAGADA, 45

Mauricio Arriagada, a father of five, could not be revived by police, who discovered him. He had celebrated his birthday days before he died.

TUN WIN, 49
Date of death: Sept. 13
Location: 600 block of
28th Street West
Tun Win was assaulted in a home in late July, and died of his injuries on Sept. 13.
Charges: Corey Gordon Kittiekaywinnie, 31, was previously charged with aggravated assault, but after Win’s death, the charge was upgraded to manslaughter. Police believe the two men knew each other.
RICHARD FERNUK, 68
Date of death: Aug. 3

St. Charles Avenue
Police say Richard Fernuk called 911 on Aug. 1, after he experienced chest pains. He was taken to hospital and asked to be discharged after he was treated. Officers went to check on him on Aug. 3, and found him dead. Charges: Leo Roy Daniels, 37, has been charged with first-degree murder. Police have said they do not believe the men knew each other.
ANDREW MERASTY, 25
Date of death: Aug. 18
Location: 1800 block of 20th Street West
Police found Merasty when they responded to a call about an injured person. Merasty, who had sustained a gunshot wound, was taken to hospital, where he died. Charges: Craig Don Gladue, 20, was charged months later with first-degree murder, using a firearm in the commission of an offence, unauthorized possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm with recklessness.
RIO CHECKOSIS, 22

Rio Checkosis, a father of two toddlers, was found injured by police and taken to hospital, where he died. His youngest son turned two in December. In an interview with The Starphoenix in late August, his mother described him as a kind-hearted person who minded his business. Charges: A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with second-degree murder.
KEVIN NATAUCAPPO, 31

Howell Avenue
Kevin Nataucappo, a father of two, died in hospital after he was assaulted at a house. His sister told The Starphoenix he and his girlfriend had spent part of the evening with her before going to another house on the night of the assault.
Charges: Mohamad Al-zawahreh, 23, Darrell Keith Dustyhorn,
37, Destin Mosquito, 21, and Devin Aldon Wesaquate, 25, are charged with manslaughter and breaking and entering to commit an assault with a weapon.
KEEGAN VENNE, 27
Date of death: Sept. 28
Location: 900 block of Northumberland Avenue
Police say emergency responders were called to the scene where a man was injured following an altercation between a group of people in a parking lot. The man was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries.
Charges: Jordan Bird-night, 26, is charged with second-degree murder and a 33-year-old man is charged with accessory after the fact to aggravated assault.
TEEN MALE, 15, NAME WITHHELD
Date of death: Nov. 2
Location: 2300 block of Arlington Avenue
The teen was discovered injured after someone made a report about a person in “medical distress.” Life-saving efforts were not successful. His injuries were later determined to be the result of a gunshot. He cannot be named due to provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, which prevent the naming of youth victims of alleged youth crimes.
Charges: Three boys — two 15-year-olds and one 17-year-old — are charged with seconddegree murder. One of the 15-year-olds faces charges of unlawful possession of firearm and a breach; the 17-year-old is also charged with a breach.

Winston Littlecrow, a father of five, was shot and killed at a house on the morning of Dec. 7. ” Charges: A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for Eiryn Ashlee Straightnose on a charge of first-degree murder. .
