Appearing in Saskatoon provincial court by video from police detention, 22-year-old Stacey-marie Stone asked if anyone was in the courtroom for her.

Her mother and sister sat in the spectators’ gallery on Monday morning as Stone tearfully requested legal aid for her scheduled bail hearing on Wednesday.

Her charges were not read aloud, but court information confirms Stone was charged over the weekend with impaired driving causing the death of 23-year-old Kionna Nicotine. Police said Nicotine died after she was struck in a parking lot in the 700 block of Appleby Drive around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Stone is also charged with failing to stop at the scene of the collision.

Nicotine’s family has set up a Gofundme page, indicating funds will go toward assisting family members as well as an LGBTQ2S+ scholarship in her memory.

“24 hours ago my beautiful, handsome 2-spirited daughter Kionna Nicotine made her sacred walk to the Sky World to be with our Great Creator. Our family is so broken and we feel so lost,” Nicotine’s mother, Vanessa, posted Sunday on Facebook.

Gofundme organizers said Nicotine was an educational assistant and role model for her three young siblings.

“She was an amazing, inspiring, outgoing, loving, caring, forgiving person. Her heart and mind were too pure for this cruel world.”

Terra Nicotine, on her Facebook page, said a candlelight vigil was scheduled for her sister on Monday night in Saskatoon, urging anyone who was “close to her or if she sparked a light in your life” to join the family at the event.
