Emmys recognize nonbinary stars
Emmy Award nominees and winners will now have the option to use a gender-neutral term. Nominees in the best actress or best actor category can choose to be called a “performer” on their nomination certificate and Emmy statuette rather than “actor” or “actress” when the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards take place in September. The move comes amid a years-long debate over how to accommodate gender-neutral performers at awards shows. Emmy nominations will be announced July 13, with the ceremony Sept. 19.
