COMING TO YOU LIVE
April offers a variety of music to explore in Saskatoon and nearby, including Celtic, folk and pop performances, and an open-stage variety night. Jocelyn Bennett has the details on five shows you won't want to miss this month.
THE FITZGERALDS
The Fitzgeralds are a family group performing Celtic fiddle pieces and high-energy step dancing, with a focus on original compositions. The fiddle and step dance champions fuse traditional and modern fiddle and dance to create their own, unique style.
“The Fitzgeralds will be performing a mix of traditional and original Celtic music as well as high-energy Ottawa Valley step dancing and vocals. They are very excited for a return to the Bassment with a show that has something for everyone,” said Julie Fitzgerald.
The Fitzgeralds perform at
The Bassment April 12 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $27 to $37, available at thebassment.ca.
HAWKSLEY WORKMAN
Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Hawksley Workman brings his career-spanning repertoire for an evening of music and storytelling. Defying genres, his songs present a blend of folk, pop and cabaret styles.
“From the early days at Louis' Pub to the nights at The Broadway, Saskatoon has always been a welcoming place to pull the tour van into ... I love nachos at Amigos and I love seeing the pelicans on the river,” Workman said.
Hawksley Workman performs at Broadway Theatre on April 20 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35, available at broadwaytheatre.ca.
ROYAL CANOE
Royal Canoe challenge themselves to bring something new to their music. Their most recent album, Sidelining, was an exercise in creativity and trust, where they chose to plan and record in one day. It resulted in a raw and honest sound.
“We've spent so much time on the road over the last decade that it's hard to wrap my head around the fact that we haven't had a proper tour in 21/2 years. Looking forward to sharing the experience of getting back at it with everyone ...” said singer Matt Peters. “We love Saskatoon. It's probably the city we've played the most besides Winnipeg and we've always felt really lucky to get such incredible support whenever we come out.”
Royal Canoe performs with Zoon at Broadway Theatre on April 23 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25, available at broadwaytheatre.ca.
LIVE AND LOCAL MUSIC NIGHT
Singer-songwriter Joe Callahan hosts regular musical variety nights on the last Thursday of each month.
The night starts with a performance by Callahan. Audience members are then invited to perform on the open stage or join the song circle session that closes the evening.
“I'm really looking forward to sharing some of my music with musicians and live music lovers from the greater Saskatoon community at this beautiful venue in Rosthern. The Station Arts Centre is a great place for creative folks to meet and I look forward to meeting and making music with the folks who attend,” Callahan said.
The variety night takes place at Station Arts Centre in Rosthern April 28 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. Visit stationarts.com.
