Drag Race a big winner

- MELISSA HANK

The Canadian Screen Awards were a drag Wednesday night — in the best way possible. Canada's Drag Race won six trophies on the third night of the weeklong celebration, hosted by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television.

Canada's Drag Race, which streams on Crave, took home awards for best reality/competition program or series, and best variety or entertainment special. It was also honoured for writing, casting, editing and direction. The drag queen competition was the most-awarded show of the night, which was dedicated to children's programs and animation, as well as lifestyle and reality programs.

Five other shows took home two trophies apiece. Artists & Icons: Indigenous Entertainers in Canada, a special ET Canada episode airing on Global, won the CSA for best talk program or series, as well as one for directing.

Corner Gas Animated, on CTV Comedy Channel, was honoured for its direction and as the best animated program or series. Meanwhile, CTV Life Channel's cooking show Mary Makes It Easy won for best lifestyle program or series, plus best lifestyle host for Mary Berg. The kiddies will be giddy to know the ubiquitous TVOKIDS show PAW Patrol was named the best preschool program or series, and it was honoured for its sound. Finally, YTV'S reboot The Hardy Boys took the best children's or youth programming or series award, along with one for directing.

The academy continues its celebration of Canadian entertainment on Thursday, with the drama and comedy crafts awards, plus the scripted programs and performance awards. On Friday, the cinematic arts are in the spotlight. All those virtual shows will stream live on Academy.ca and on the Academy's Twitter and Youtube channels.

The final 2022 Canadian Screen Awards ceremony airs Sunday on CBC and streams on CBC Gem.
