WHAT’S IN YOUR GOLF BAG THIS SEASON?

- BARB LIVINGSTONE

CLUBS

If you want to hit the ball like newly minted Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, then take a look in his bag to find Taylormade’s new Stealth Plus series, including the new driver.

The company is lauding its move beyond titanium towards the much lighter (by 40 per cent) carbon fibre face and its upsizing (20 per cent) over the 2020 SIM driver. While not guaranteeing more speed, the lighter face and heavier back section creates a more efficient transfer of energy to the ball, says Taylormade. Know this: Scheffler’s picked up an average 3.4 mph more ball speed, translating to 11 more yards of distance, compared to his previous driver.

Cobra is heralding a “huge leap forward” in putter technology with expansion of its KING 3D Printed and Vintage Series featuring new models, an all-new black colour, and hosel (the place on a golf club where the shaft is connected to the clubhead) additions. There is a style for every preference and putting stroke. The KING 3D Printed Putter Series is the first and only family to feature a 3D printed multi-material construction. The KING Vintage Series debuts a new mallet shape with the Cuda, available in a single bend and a slant neck design.

TECH

Hybrid golf clubs are the real deal so why not add the convenience of a hybrid golf watch? The A2 Hybrid Golf GPS Watch combines digital athletic watch functionality with technological features to aid you on the golf course. It’s preloaded with more than 40,000 courses around the world, uses GPS to automatically recognize the course and hole you’re on and display the remaining slope-compensated distance to the green. It comes with full fitness mode, cycling mode, alarm, and stopwatch, so you can combine golf and fitness while keeping track of scoring, analyzing swing tempo, and monitoring all those calories you’re burning.

SHOES

Golf shoes have to offer comfort, durability (playing in all of Canada’s weather conditions) and style for both men and women.

What could be more stylish for men than the reinvention of basketball legend Michael Jordan’s Nike Air Jordans in a new golf edition: the Air Jordan 12 Low.

The shoes feature the rising sun-inspired stitch lines and quilted-like upper so popular in the 90’s basketball shoe version, partnered with grippy spiked outsole and a springy, full-length Zoom Air unit. https://www.nike.com/ca/t/air-jordan-xii-low-golf-shoes

Ecco has become one of the most popular brands of comfortable golf shoes (especially if you intend to walk the course) for women, from the completely slim-line, waterproof, hybrid Cool Pro line to the Golf Tray Laced, a lightweight sneaker style that comes in eight colours, made with durable waterproof leather and a removable, washable insole. Both are designed to be worn on and off the course.

CLOTHING

Golf clothing obviously has to be comfortable (including UV protectant and moisture wicking materials) but like everything else on the course, it’s increasingly stylish — hybrid if you will since many people wear their golf clothes off-course as well. New York-based designer Jamie Sadock has been setting that trend for years, with her colourful and bold golf clothing — often complete with beading and embroidery. This year is no different with options for both men and women.

BALLS

You’re looking good, have the right clubs and now it’s time to hit the course. Every year it seems there is a new golf ball designed to make you hit farther, straighter, and with more ease. This year is no different. Titleist has it’s Trufeel ball, which it describes as its softest ball, that has been redesigned for more distance while sporting a thinner cover for better feel around the green. It’s available in white and yellow with a matte red coming in the second half of the year.
