Cheer crates handed out to school families in need

Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation provides food, games for summer break

-

Recognizing the importance of providing assistance over the summer to families in need, a local organization has offered another helping hand as the school year comes to a close.

Upwards of 800 families were provided with food, games and personal care items through the delivery on Wednesday of cheer crates from the Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation (SPSF).

The Cheer Crate Campaign was created to support Saskatoon Public Schools' families during the COVID-19 pandemic — and the SPSF has no plans to stop now.

“Schools are the heart of our community and a place where students receive nutrition, education and emotional support,” SPSF executive director Zeba Ahmad said.

“Because of the response from the community and the need identified within (Saskatoon Public Schools) families, Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation hopes to continue delivering cheer crates so that families have some much-needed extras during extended school breaks.”

Since the campaign started, almost 4,000 crates filled with food, learning materials, and necessities have been shared with families. The deliveries on Wednesday took place at Mount Royal Mennonite Church.

The crates are valued at around $100 each, with items such as fruits and vegetables, eggs and bread, dairy products, cereal and canned goods, plus books, personal items and games for families. School co-ordinators and staff helped identify those who would most benefit from the crates.

Around 75 volunteers, teachers and staff helped with packing and delivery.
