FIVE WEEKEND ACTIVITIES
There's lots to engage in this weekend, while celebrating conservation and arts and culture in the city, says Jocelyn Bennett. She suggests a few events you might want to put on your to-do list.
1. Learn about sheep grazing
The Meewasin Valley Authority is reintroducing a sheep herd to the Meewasin Valley for targeted conservation grazing. The sheep will be at Beaver Creek Conservation Area through October, with free public demonstrations of the process. One-hour demonstrations will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Tickets are required. Learn more at meewasin.com.
2. Celebrate Culture Days
A fall festival of arts, culture and creativity, Culture Days presents free events and activities that include workshops, storytelling, presentations, displays, games and crafts. This year, the festival commemorates the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30 with events and partnerships promoting Truth and Reconciliation. The festival kicks off across the country on Friday and runs through Oct. 16, featuring in-person and digital events. Learn more at culturedays.ca.
3. Experience a classic tale told through ballet
Canada's Ballet Jörgen presents Anne of Green Gables The Ballet, a colourful and evocative production based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's beloved novel. Follow along on the early 20th-century adventures of a highly imaginative orphan girl who is sent to live on a farm in the fictional town of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island. The performance is at TCU Place Sunday at 7 p.m. For details, visit: tcutickets.ca.
4. Check out a fine art fair
Presented by Creative Saskatchewan and Saskgalleries, the seventh annual Art Now: Saskatchewan Fine Art Fair showcases the works of established and emerging Canadian artists. With an emphasis on Saskatchewan fine art, the family-friendly event includes panels, artist talks and family programming. The fair runs to Sunday at Prairieland Park, with some works and presentations viewable online. Learn more at artnow.ca.
5. Kick off a new season with Live Five
Live Five Independent Theatre presents the first production of its 19th season, in association with Pegasus Productions. A new play by Gordon Portman, After Sunset, sees Lu, the estranged adult child of a troubled marriage, returning home after losing their partner. Lu attempts to reconnect with their parents — a father with Alzheimer's and a mother who struggles to care for him. Performances are held at The Refinery Friday to Sunday and Sept. 29 to Oct 2.
