Quakers win PJHL championsh­ip

Blazers fall to Wheat Kings in OT in Telus Cup West Regional final

Payton Kachur scored at 3:28 of overtime to give the Saskatoon Quakers a 6-5 win over the Regina Capitals and the Prairie Junior Hockey League championsh­ip final.

The Quakers took the best-ofseven series in five games with all five games decided by a single goal.

In Game 5, Ethan Scriven tallied twice to lead the Quakers, who got singles from Roper Blanchard, Curren Wintonyk-pilot and Bryck Kemp. Kris Johnson made 30 saves in net for the win.

In Game 4 Saturday, Wintonyk-point secured a hat trick on an overtime goal, leading the Quakers to a 6-5 win.

Earlier in the week, in Thursday's Game 3, Saskatoon won 4-3 with four different Quakers scoring.

The series opened with Saskatoon winning 3-2 in overtime on March 30, before falling to Regina 2-1 on April 1.

SASKATOON BLAZERS TRIO WINS TELUS CUP WEST REGIONAL FINAL AWARD

Brady Turko scored two minutes and 21 seconds into overtime to give the Brandon AAA Wheat Kings a 1-0 victory over the Saskatoon AAA Blazers in the Telus Cup West Regional final Sunday.

With the win, Brandon secured a berth into the Telus Cup Championsh­ip (April 22-28 in Membertou, Nova Scotia.) as the West representa­tive.

Saskatoon's Raiden Zacharias was named the tournament's top forward, while Grayson Malinoski captured the top goalie award. Blazers forward Lee Shurgot received the tournament's most dedicated athlete scholarshi­p award.

The Blazers and Wheat Kings had met twice at the Telus Cup West Regional championsh­ip — first in the opening round robin game and once in the final — but both games ended in a loss for the Blazers.

Saskatoon earned its way to the final by finishing 2-1 in the tournament's round robin.

In their first game of the regional championsh­ips against the Wheat Kings on Thursday, Cole Harris scored the first goal for the Blazers one minute and 38 seconds into the second period, but it was the team's only goal as they fell 4-1. In the final, Blazers goalie Grayson Malinoski had a shutout going until Turko's goal in OT.

The Blazers turned it around after that, as Saskatoon goalie Madex Kabrud made 14 saves to record the shut out and lead his team to a 6-0 victory over the Thunder Bay Kings on Friday, and followed that up with a 4-2 win against the host Winnipeg Wild on Saturday, with Preston Baerwald scoring twice.

BOMBERS, MUSTANGS LEAD SJHL SEMIFINALS

The Flin Flon Bombers held a commanding 3-0 lead in their bestof-seven Saskatchew­an Junior Hockey League semifinal series with the Battleford­s North Stars heading into Game 4 on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, the Melfort Mustangs were up on the Humboldt Broncos 2-0 in their semifinal series when they headed into Game 4 Tuesday. Tuesday night's results were not available at press time.

On Monday, former Saskatoon Blade forward Justin Lies tallied twice as the Bombers beat the North Stars 5-2 in Game 3 in North Battleford. Koen Senft, Carter Anderson and Noah Houle also scored for Flin Flon. Kian Bell had both goals for the hometown North Stars.

Six different Bombers scored to give Flin Flon a 6-2 victory in Game 2 against the North Stars, while, in the first game on Thursday, Justin Lies scored two power play goals to lead the Bombers to a 4-3 win.

In the other SJHL semifinal series, Ryan Duguay and Chase Friedt scored twice to lead the Mustangs to a 4-3 victory over the Broncos in Game 2. Melfort opened the series with a 4-2 win that saw Duguay also score a pair of goals.

Game 4 of that series will be played Wednesday night, 7:30 p.m., at the Elgar Peterson Arena in Humboldt.
