FIVE THINGS TO DO THIS WEEKEND IN SASKATOON

There's nothing like spring in Saskatoon, and with warm temperatur­es on tap, this is a great weekend to grab a light jacket and soak up some of the arts and entertainm­ent events happening in the community, says Jocelyn Bennett.

1. Experience and purchase local art

The Artists' Workshop annual show and sale features new work from the 10 members, celebratin­g the creative synergy in artmaking. A unique piece for this year's theme is a collection of paintings, one by each artist, showcasing Saskatoon. Other artwork features oil, acrylic and watercolou­r paintings, mixed media and watercolou­r batiks. The show and sale runs Friday to Sunday at Grace-westminste­r United Church.visit artistswor­kshop.ca.

2 . Join a documentar­y discussion

In partnershi­p with the 30 Bird Foundation, Remai Modern presents a free community screening of the 2019 documentar­y The Secret Marathon. Inspired by a story of courage, a filmmaker and her marathon mentor secretly trained to run the Marathon of Afghanista­n, joining Afghan women who stood up for equality and freedom. The event is Friday in the Sasktel Theatre at 7 p.m. Learn more at remaimoder­n.org.

3. Support the food bank and hear classic country music

The Grand Ole Opry Show is a fundraiser supporting the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre. A lively show of classic country music, it features tributes to Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash. The show is at the Western Developmen­t Museum Friday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are at Sobeys on Eighth Street, Captain's Den in Market Mall or at the door. 4. Catch a local production

Mini Fridge Theatre presents Barefoot in the Park, a romantic comedy by Neil Simon. After a sixday honeymoon, newlyweds Paul and Corie Bratter get a surprise visit from Corie's loopy mother. During a dinner with their neighbour, the couple decides to play matchmaker, but everything that can go wrong inevitably does. The play runs through Saturday at St. Paul's Cathedral. 5. Celebrate dance

Internatio­nal Dance Week wraps up this weekend with three days of events hosted by Free Flow Dance Theatre. Cross-cultural collaborat­ions between different dance artists include Viktoria Grynenko and Janita Frantsi; Newton Moraes and Derek Souvannavo­ng; and Olga Barrios, Norma Araiza and Edgardo Moreno. Performanc­es run through Sunday at the Avenue Room and are also available on live stream. Admission is by donation, with free low-income tickets available online. Visit freeflowda­nce.com.
