Valkyries quell Riot in WWCFL season opener

The Saskatoon Valkyries began the hunt for their ninth Western Women's Canadian Football League title on Sunday, travelling to Regina to take on the Riot.

The Valkyries came home with a 19-6 victory. Danaye Holynski, with a fumble recovery in the end zone, and Sarah Wright scored touchdowns for Saskatoon, which led 12-0 at the half. The Riot also gave up two safeties.

Saskatoon will face the Manitoba Fearless for their home opener on Sunday at 1 p.m. at SMF Field and will follow that up by playing host to the Riot on May 18.

The Valkyries wrap up their regular season on June 2 visiting the Fearless in Winnipeg.

FLIN FLON TIGHTENS SJHL FINAL VS. MELFORT

The Flin Flon Bombers pulled within one game of tying the Melfort Mustangs in the Saskatchew­an Junior Hockey League bestof-seven final after a 5-2 victory on Saturday night in front of a hometown crowd.

Riley Niven, Anthony Piccininno, Alexi Sylvestre, Carter Anderson and Justin Lies all scored for the Bombers, while Aidyn Hutchinson and Danton Cox had the goals for the Mustangs.

Melfort still holds a 3-2 edge in the best-of-seven series.

The Mustangs won the first three games of the series, including a 4-3 double overtime victory on April 24 that saw Hutchinson notch the game-winner.

Facing eliminatio­n, the Bombers then won their first game of the series on April 25, edging the Mustangs 4-3 in overtime.

The series returns to Melfort for Game 6 on Tuesday, while Game 7, if needed, will be played Friday in Flin Flon.

SASKATOON JUDO EARNS NINE PROVINCIAL GOLDS

The Saskatoon Judo Club returned from the provincial championsh­ips held in Moose Jaw on April 13 with 16 medals, nine of which were gold.

Three of those belonged to Chris Hodgson, who topped the podium in the senior men's +100-kilogram division, the veteran men's +81-kg division and the Ne-waza senior men's +81-kg division.

Azra Benic also won a pair of gold medals, in the U16 female 70-kg event as well as the Ne-waza U16/ senior women's +70-kg event.

In the U12 male division, Jackson Tatlow captured gold in Pool B, while Yassine Hussein won Pool D.

Wrapping up the gold-medal tally, Dylan Tatlow won the U14 female 52-kg division and Riley Stang was tops in the senior men's 73-kg division.

Overall, the Saskatoon club finished fourth with 156 points.

MCQUEEN OUT AT U18 WORLD CHAMPIONSH­IP

Saskatoon's Roger Mcqueen is out of the IIHF U18 World Championsh­ip due to injury.

Hockey Canada announced the status update of the forward on Sunday, before their 8-1 rout of Switzerlan­d in round-robin play.

Canada earlier won its first two games of the event, 6-3 over Sweden in their April 25 opener and shutting out Czechia 6-0 on Friday.

Mcqueen had an assist in the game against Sweden.
