Valkyries 2-0 following 26-0 win over Fearless

The Saskatoon Valkyries improved their Western Women's Canadian Football League record to 2-0 with a 26-0 shutout win over the visiting Manitoba Fearless on Sunday afternoon at SMF Field.

Quarterbac­k Alex Eyolfson threw touchdown passes to Haley Girolami and Reed Thorstad. Sarah Wright ran for the other TD major for the Valkyries, who got a pair of field goals from Grace Moehler.

The Valkyries kicked off their campaign to capture their ninth title with a 19-6 road win over provincial rivals the Regina Riot April 28.

They'll have a weekend bye before resuming action at home on Saturday, May 18, against the rival Riot. Game time is 7 p.m. at SMF Field.

CHADWICK WINS WHL SCHOLASTIC PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Saskatoon's Noah Chadwick was named the recipient of the 2024 Daryl K (Doc) Seaman Memorial Trophy, which is presented to the Western Hockey League player who has excelled both in the classroom and on the ice during the regular season.

Chadwick, a defenceman with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, graduated Grade 12 a year early while receiving the Governor General's Award for the highest grade in his graduating glass.

He then began taking courses at Athabasca University and Lethbridge College, receiving multiple marks over 90 per cent.

On the ice this season, Chadwick had 12 goals and 44 assists, adding to his career total of 19 goals and 60 assists in 146 games.

His talents led him to be drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the sixth round, 185th overall, in the 2023 NHL draft.

LOCAL TALENT SHOWCASING BLIND HOCKEY

Saskatoon's Adriann Ekstrom and Adam Kugler-sprayson, as well as Regina's Jason Willer, joined players from across Canada to put on a blind hockey showcase in Calgary on the weekend ahead of the World Para Ice Hockey Championsh­ip.

In Game 1 of the showcase, Team Yellow defeated Team Black 7-6, with Game 2 scheduled for Sunday evening.

Earlier in the year, Ekstrom was named rookie of the year at the National Blind Hockey Tournament after scoring three goals and picking up one assist in the open division.
