FIVE THINGS TO DO IN SASKATOON

Celebrate the special women in your life this Mother's Day weekend and take in some of the family-friendly art and music events happening in the city, says Jocelyn Bennett.

1. Interact at an art opening

PAVED Arts presents Enacting Echoes by Nigerian-canadian artist Judah Iyunade. Static images fuse with film elements in a rich, visual storytelli­ng experience that blurs the line between reality and illusion. Iyunade discusses theatrical narratives and painting at the gallery on Friday at 7 p.m. The opening reception follows at 8 p.m. The exhibition runs to June 14. Learn more at pavedarts.ca.

2. Enjoy art-inspired musical performanc­es

Remai Modern hosts a guided tour of A Sound that Never Was by artist duo The Dim Coast in the Feature Gallery on Friday. The tour is followed by a rooftop performanc­e of Raven Chacon's Compass by Chad Munson, then a concert in the Riverview Room by Isabella Forciniti and Steve Bates. The tour begins at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, Remai Modern presents Music of Picasso, a concert in Sofia Mycyk's performanc­e series. The pianist has created a repertoire related to the life and times of Picasso, which includes pieces by Isaac Albéniz, Francis Poulenc and Erik Satie. 3. Learn at an art talk and opening

The Saskatchew­an Craft Council Gallery presents Queer Newfoundla­nd Hockey League, a solo exhibition by Lucas Morneau. Crochet, queered hockey cards and rug hooking are used to introduce a fictional hockey league, with the aim of deconstruc­ting homophobia in sports culture. Morneau hosts a talk at the gallery Saturday at 6:30 p.m., followed by the opening reception. The exhibition runs to July 6. Learn more at saskcraftc­ouncil.org.

4. Get immersed in choral music

Eclipse Chorus presents Songs from the Silver Screen. The choral group transports listeners back to memories of those magical moments of watching new box office hits on the big, silver screen. The concert is Saturday at the Broadway Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Learn more at broadwayth­eatre.ca.

Saskatoon Chamber Singers present So You Want to

Write a Fugue? Presented as an instructio­n manual, the concert features guest soloist Oli Guselle and Saskatoon Men's Chorus. The show is Sunday at Knox United Church at 3 p.m. Learn more at saskatoonc­hambersing­ers.ca.

Celebrate your mom on Sunday

The Saskatoon Farmers' Market honours Mother's Day on Sunday with pancakes, plants and literary inspiratio­n. The family event features a pancake and sausage breakfast, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the annual plant sale, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and readings by Saskatchew­an author Marilyn Frey, from her memoir Reflection­s in a Farmhouse Window at 10:30 a.m. and noon. The Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra Chamber Ensemble celebrates Mother's Day with an afternoon performanc­e. Enjoy classical pieces from Claude Arrieu, Mozart, Yash Kathrotia and Robert Fleming. The free concert is Sunday at 2 p.m. at Grosvenor Park Church. Learn more at saskatoons­ymphony. org.
