A man of respect and kindness: remembering Roger Bolduc

- By Gordon Lambie By Matthew McCully

On November 28 of 2015, 83 year old Roger Bolduc died after falling and hitting his head during a routine morning stop to see friends in Sawyerville. Though the death itself was sudden and shocking, Marc Nault, Bolduc’s son-in-law, said that the circumstances that caused it were not a complete surprise, since the lifelong horse and cattle farmer had been facing a slow decline in strength and mobility over the last several years.

“Roger was someone really special,” Nault said. “If you need a work to describe Roger, it was respect; he respected everybody and everybody respected him.”

Drawing on his experience teaching marketing at the Cegep de Sherbrooke, Nault said that his father-in-law had a remarkable mind for the business of running a farm. Bolduc having gotten started early in his life on the large property between Eaton Corner and Sawyerville that would become the family farm, Nault said that many thought that the young man had bitten off more than he could chew. Through hard work, determination, and human decency, however, the man made a life for himself and his family and rose to a point of renown across the province and the country for his work with horses.

Reverend Heather Thompson showing off some of the hats dropped off at her office on the Bishop's University campus for the 25,000 tuques campaign to offer Syrian refugees a warm welcome to Canada.

When The Record last checked in with Thompson in early December, she had collected around three dozen hats. Thompson has since passed on 165 hats to the proper channels to distributed to refugees. She is now starting a new post holiday collection, and will continue to accept donations until the end of January, she said.

Thompson is one of three drop-off points in Sherbrooke accepting donations. Visit the 25,000 tuques website or facebook page for more details.
