Stingers get second win over Gaiters in season finale

- By Dylan Konecny

Concordia booked their ticket to the RSEQ playoffs Saturday afternoon after beating the Gaiters to the tune of 39-6 on Coulter Field.

Concordia opened the scoring on their first drive when Colin Sequeira found Justin Julien for a 26-yard touchdown pass going up 7-0 to take the lead, which they held from then on out.

Down 9-0 after conceding a safety, Bishop’s got on the board with 33-yard field goal from Vincent Dubé.

The field goal was set up after the Gaiters captain and graduating linebacker Shayne Cowan-cholette, picked off Sequeira at the Bishop’s 39-yard line and returned the ball 38-yards setting up the drive for the Dubé field goal.

After another safety put the Stingers up 11-3. Bishop’s got a solid passing drive from Jaeden Marwick getting the Gaiters in the red zone where Dubé would cut the lead to five points with a 12-yard field goal.

The Gaiters were keeping the game close in the opening half in large part to their ability to run the ball on the Stingers. Runningback Vincent Davignon was leading the charge on the Gaiters offence the 5th year rusher moved the chains with some strong running, finishing the game with an average of 4.5-yards per carry.

The game got away from the Gaiters in the second half though with Concordia putting up another 28 points on four touchdowns, while shutting out the Gaiters in the final 30 minutes.

Bishop’s defence suffered a key loss with injuries to linebackers on back to back plays combined with an unnecessary roughness penalty putting the Stingers at first and goal. Jean Guyrimpel scored on his first attempt from the 3-yard line.

With the momentum from their first touchdown of the second half, Mickey Donavon’s squad hit the gas and added another three touchdowns to finish of the regular season with the 39-6 win.

Using a rotation at quarterback with Marwick and Matheiu Demers, the Gaiters produced a total of 128-yards in total offence in their final contest.

The loss for the Gaiters means that Bishop’s finished 2016 with their third consecutive one win season under head coach Kevin Mackey. The former CIS Coach of the Year is now 3-21 leading the Purple and Silver since the Gaiters 2013 campaign where Bishop’s went 6-2 and hosted a home playoff game.
