Richmond Youth Fair card party

-

What do cranberry muffins, geraniums, peanuts, coffee table coasters, photo albums, tea towels, and even a mini pie have in common? They were some of the prizes at the May 4 Richmond Youth Fair card party. Sixty supporters of the Youth Fair came out that evening to play Military Whist at fifteen tables. A big thank you to our Richmond/melbourne United Church friends who lend us their hall and kitchen for this annual fundraising event.

The card playing friends were warmly welcomed and thanked by the Richmond Youth Fair Committee President Sarah Fowler and the card playing began a few minutes after 7:30 p.m. After all the hands were played and the flags were counted Patsy Biggs asked for the results. The first place winners with 29 hard-won flags were Fran Dewar, Helen Gallup, Larry Frost and Micheline Handfield. The team of Ian and Shirley Smith, Judy and Francis Saffin was in second place with 28 flags. The team of Hughie Lancaster, Raymond Mastine, Gerry Ouellet and Ross Davidson won the booby prizes because they held last place with 14 flags.

There were enough prizes left so that forty-two other people were made happy by winning door prizes. Here are their names: Melodie Pariseau, Brooke Fowler-lachapelle, Joyce Mastine, Ross Davidson, Carol Nixon, Raymond Fortier, Norma Morin, Linda Badger, Wanda Viens, Klea Mastine, Evelyn Fraser, Betty Vander Wal, Sherley Provis, Gerry Ouellett, Helen Gallup, Harry Morrill, Eileen Perkins, Noreen Brown, Jean-guy Mailhot, Pauline Pelletier, Freda Coote, Marie Cassidy, Amanda Woodford, Larry Frost. Phyllis Patterson, Shirley Beasley, Mary Beth Skerry, Jim Stevens, Vera Hughes, Francis Saffin, Mattie Banfill, Alle Vander Wal, Sharon Mcmorine, Judy Saffin, Wendy Ridley, Mary Goodfellow, Ian Smith, Debbie Knowles, Donna Ham, Elizabeth Blouin, Helen Knowles and Lou Joyal.

A grocery box went home with Shirley Smith. I think that Ian helped Shirley carry that heavily loaded grocery sack even though he had to carry the gift card from the Richmond Familiprix Pharmacy that he also won. A good friend of the Richmond Youth Fair Mark Biggs donated two gift cards from his favourite grocery store MAXI as prizes. They were won by Vera Hughes and Marybeth Skerry.

Now before, after, and during all this prizegiving a delicious and bountiful lunch was being prepared and served by busy kitchen workers Betty Vander Wal, Noreen Brown and Brooke Fowlerlachapelle. Where did all that tasty food come from? Many of the same people who donated prizes also provided sandwiches and sweets. The members of the Youth Fair Committee send out a big thank you to all for such faithful and generous support every year. Freda Coote donated those muffins and that pie that Larry Frost took home.
