Kayla’s Summer School for Wayward

Women under 40! Avante has a new member on staff. Kayla Chamberlin is our anglophone outreach worker with a mandate to work with English speaking women under 40, and her programs will be running throughout the summer. Every Tuesday and Wednesday from 1-8 p.m. Kayla will be offering courses and workshops specifically geared to the reality of the younger women in our community. Some of the topics include healthy meals, healthy relationships, basic sewing, home remedies, and home pickling! She will also be running a fourweek program on stress management, but a preregistration is required, as this will be a closed group. For more details, call our centre at 450-248-0530, and ask for Kayla.

Final Activities A reminder of our June activities – On Thursday, June 15, we will be offering a free bowl of homemade soup over the lunch hour, so that you can have a casual visit with us and other women, and then at 1:30, Barb will be guiding you through the steps to making a DIY welcome sign for your front porch. Please call to reserve your spot if you’re interested in participating. Our last event before the summer will be our salad potluck luncheon, on Tuesday, June 20 at the Anglican Church Hall, 40 rue du Pont, in Bedford. Join us for a feast of flavour as we sample everyone’s favourite summer dishes, have many, many laughs, and share our plans for the upcoming months. Starts at noon.

Theatre in the Barn And finally, we must talk about our spectacularly successful fundraiser, Theatre in the Barn event on Saturday, May 27. Thanks to all who came to the Baker Barn, making the in-house theatre production of “13 hands” a sold out show! We cannot thank Frank Johnston-main enough for the opportunity to host another play reading in the barn and for his behind-the-scenes organizing.

A huge thank you also goes out to the actors: Mary, Laura, Linda, Marilyn, and Gisa for donating their time and to Knowlton Players for their collaboration allowing all proceeds (roughly $1,700) from the evening’s performance to go directly to the centre. Another big thanks to John and Dianne for the use of their beautiful barn.

The centre will be open for drop-in services and resources in July and August, except for the weeks of July 24 and July 31, when we will be completely closed for vacation. Please feel free to find out more about Avante Women’s Centre by calling 450-248-0530, visiting us at 15 rue du Pont in Bedford, on our website at avantewomenscentre.org, and on Facebook.
