uebec police say they have many more witnesses to question during their investigation into a suspicious fire over the weekend at a seniors' residence that left one dead.

Provincial police Sgt. Marc Tessier says investigators arrested a 44-year-old man Sunday but released him the same day after questioning.

A 94-year-old woman died after the fire broke out around 1:30 a.m. Sunday at the Oasis seniors’ residence in Terrebonne, just north of Montreal.

Forty-three people were rescued and 12 were hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

Tessier said today evidence at the scene is leading investigators to believe the fire was criminal but he wouldn’t give details.

Quebec’s minister responsible for seniors said the residence was in the process of installing a sprinkler system but could not say whether it had been activated during the fire.

The company that reportedly obtained the contract to install the sprinklers could not immediately be reached for comment.
