“Nobody” suits the White House better than Donald

- Tim Belford

Like a lot of people out there, particularly in the U. S. of A., I was a little skeptical when Donald Trump ran for the Republican Party’s nomination as President. Nor did I think, even after he won that mud-slinger of a campaign, that he would beat Hillary Clinton in the Presidential knock-down, drag-it-out fight that was to follow. I guess that’s why I’m not a political analyst for CNN or the CBC.

Afterwards, when the initial shock at what our friends to the south had actually done set in, I still refused to give up hope clinging, like so many others, to the belief that donning the mantel of power would temper Trump’s tendency towards buffoonery and that he would grow into the job. We know how that worked out.

Well, now that he’s been around close to a year, I’ve changed my mind. I’ve come to believe that the old adage, “You get the government you deserve,” is not only right but that Donald Trump is in fact the perfect President for today’s society. Just as Abraham Lincoln, with his soaring rhetoric and humble nature, was the ideal man to lead the United States in its most trying of times, and Franklin Roosevelt was a perfect fit for both the depression and the Second World War, The Donald, with his golden comb-over and his inability to hold a thought longer than a thirty-second news clip, is the 21st century’s man of the hour. Here’s why:

1. As he repeatedly tells us, “Nobody” knows more about Russia and “nobody” will be harder on ISIL than himself. “Nobody” has more respect for women, particularly if they’re good looking and susceptible to his obvious charms. “Nobody” is more Conservative and “nobody” understands infrastructure better than he does. “Nobody” will stand up to North Korea the way he can and “nobody” cares more about the health of America’s poor. In fact, nobody in American political history has ever used the word “nobody” quite so much.

2. The man can express any thought and he does - in 140 characters or less, which is ideal in today’s world where at least half the population gets all its information on Facebook and Twitter, and thinks that anything over two pages long is a book. There is one drawback here in that foreign policy, economics, healthcare and pretty well everything else the government deals with is sometime a little more complicated. Then again, “nobody” understands simplicity like Donald Trump.

3. The Chief Executive of the United States’ government also has a real knack for dissing anyone who opposes him. His ability to trash talk those who challenge his decisions is right up there with your average NBA hoopster. Whether it’s “Crooked Hillary,” “Rocket Man” Kim Jong Un, “Crazy Bernie” Saunders or “Little Marco Rubio,” Trump excels at the personal putdown.

4. In an age when good old fashioned manners have lost any meaning the President is completely at home. Where “no problem” has replaced “You’re welcome” and where “please” and “thank you” are quaint reflections of the past, Trump fits right in. In a world where yelling into your smart phone in a restaurant while others try to appreciate their meal, and checking your messages in a darkened theatre while others try to enjoy the movie are seen as acceptable, The Donald is a role model.

In short, in a world that is louder, angrier, and less patient, in a world that is bombarded with information and increasingly short on knowledge, Donald Trump is a perfect fit. And sadly, it is more and more obvious that the man will never come to his senses but the truly worrisome question is will the nation ever regain its own.
