A call for vigilance and respect on Halloween evening

- Record Staff

In a few days, costumed children will storm the streets for the traditional Halloween trick or treating. For the evening to be safe, the Sûreté du Québec is reminding citizens of some safety tips.

See and be seen

It is important to make sure a child is visible as many motorists will be driving around at a time when visibility will be reduced. It is therefore advisable to choose a Halloween costume with light colors and reflective stripes. Bringing a flashlight along is also suggested.

Finally, using makeup rather than a mask allows the child to better see and hear what is happening around him.

During the evening, children should always:

• Set a route and an hour of return with parents;

• Stay in a group or with an accompanying adult;

• Never enter the house or car of a stranger;

• Never follow a stranger, whether by car or on foot;

• Cross streets at intersections;

• Walk only one side of the street at a time;

• Have treats inspected by parents before eating them.

Drivers - a call for vigilance

The police are asking for the cooperation of motorists who will have to be particularly vigilant and travel at low speed in residential areas, giving priority to children roaming the streets.

Sharing the Road

Several awareness-raising activities will be rolled out in conjunction with the concerted National Highway Sharing Operation during Halloween evening. This holiday causes many trips and requires a safe cohabitation between drivers and pedestrians. Police officers and traffic controllers will be present in residential areas to encourage young people to respect safety rules and remind drivers to be particularly cautious on the streets.
