Time to buy poppies

- By Louise Smith

In various towns around the Townships poppies are now on sale. Some people keep their poppies from year to year thinking they are doing a good thing. However, poppy sales are a major source of funding whereby legions can support local veterans and local programs in their respective areas.

If you really want to show support for the service of Canadian personnel in war time and in peace missions, buy several new poppies every year. Members from Cowansville Legion Branch No. 99 sell poppies every year to the students at Heroes’ Memorial.

Check out with your local legion to see when Remembrance Day will be commemorated. With November 11 being a Saturday, most legions are putting on their observances on that day. Even if you have never taken part in an observance, it is never too late to start. It is not only legions who have special ceremonies. There is a stone cairn on the main road in Dunham. The Missisquoi County Women’s Institutes gather every year on November 11, for a Remembrance Day ceremony.
