Phoenix drop three games in weekend action

The Sherbrooke Phoenix were outscored by a total margin of 14-7 in their last three games after being handed losses in games against the Drummondvi­lle Voltigeurs, 7-3, Rimouski Océanic, 3-0, and a 4-3 overtime loss to the Quebec Remparts.

Thursday night against the Voltigeurs starting goalie Evan Fitzpatric­k gave up 7 goals at home against Drummondvi­lle. Through the first twenty minutes the game was controlled by Sherbrooke who had a 3-1 lead going into the first intermissi­on. Both Connor Senken and Kevin Gilbert got their first goals of the season to put Sherbrooke ahead 2-0 and Hugo Roy scored to make it 3-1 with 35 seconds remaining in the first period.

Afterwards the game was taken over by Drummondvi­lle who scored six unanswered goals over the course of the second and third periods, including a natural hat-trick of three straight goals from Cedric Desruissea­ux in the second period. Fitzpatric­k stopped 20-of-27 shots in the loss.

Saturday on the road in Rimouski, Brendan Cregan got the start and stopped 29-of-32 shots in the 3-0 loss as Sherbrooke failed to get a goal past Jimmy Lemay mustering only 18 shots over the course of sixty minutes.

The Phoenix’s best performanc­e came at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City however penalties ended up proving to be costly for the Birds as the Remparts scored three power play goals, including the overtime game winner.

Mathieu Oliver got Sherbrooke on the board first Sunday scoring shorthande­d and Benjamin Tardif later made the game 2-1 with his second goal of the year. However, going into the third period the Remparts held a 3-2 lead. Midway through the period Yarolslav Alexeyev tied it at three goals apiece setting up overtime.

In overtime, Nicolas Poulin was called for interferen­ce giving Quebec the manadvanta­ge and Mathhew Boucher scored the game winner just over a minute later.

In their last five games Sherbrooke has no wins and a record of 0-4-1. Up next for the Phoenix are a pair of home games against the Blainville-boisbriand Armada and the Charlottet­own Islanders Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
