Stanstead County Women’s Institutes

The last meeting of the Stanstead County Women’s Institutes for 2017 took place on October 5 at the Beulah United Church, Ayer’s Cliff. The Hatley-stanstead group were the hostesses and prepared and served the meal to the twelve members and five guests before the meeting. On the menu was macaroni and cheese, chilli, quiche, jellied salad, broccoli salad, crusty bread, homemade pickles, pumpkin pie and apple crisp.

Our guest speaker, Debbie Mosher Roy, gave an interestin­g presentati­on on her passion for acrylic painting. She had several of her paintings on display and gave a demonstrat­ion on pallet painting. She kindly gave three paintings as door prizes. Debbie was thanked by Hatley-stanstead W.I President, Barbara Hewitt, for the inspiring presentati­on.

County President, Dyanne Saanum, opened the meeting with the Mary Stewart Collect. A minute of silence was observed for members who had passed since the last meeting. Rev Doreen Moffat was unable to stay at the meeting as she was attending the funeral of Joan Morrison, a past county president of Richmond County. Phyllis Dustin, on behalf of Hatley-stanstead W.I., officially welcomed the members to the meeting. We were happy to have Debbie Smith with us for the afternoon.

Phyllis Dustin, on behalf of Debbie Smith, County Secretary, read the minutes from the August meeting. A thank you was read from Janet Mclellan for the flowers and visit. A letter has been received from Betty Telford of the Austin branch. Betty has moved to Ontario.

and a motion was made to pay any outstandin­g bills.

Barbara Hewitt reported that the granddaugh­ter of Mrs. E.D. Smith was at the W.I. Tea Room during the Ayer’s Cliff Fair. Mrs. Smith was the first W.I. President.

Convenor Reports were presented. Agricultur­e - Phyllis Dustin. “What has the weather done to our crops in 2017”.

Health and Community Living - In the absence of Rev Doreen Moffat, Phyllis Dustin reported that the CSVM now have a Family Doctor, Dre Geneviève Roy-proulx.

Barbara Hewitt for Education and Personal Developmen­t, reported that she has visited several of the places on the Pioneer Trial and they are very informativ­e and worth a visit.

Debbie Smith for Scholarshi­ps informed the members that Bursary applicatio­n informatio­n has been sent to the Record and Journal.

Stanstead County W.I. will be taking part in the Ayer’s Cliff Christmas Village on December 9 and 10. Barbara will look into getting aprons. Janet Mclellan reported that their branch supported the North Hatley graduation in June.

Being no other business, Scotty Miller closed the meeting.
