On October 4, 2017 the meeting held in Emmanuel United Church beginning at 10:30 a.m. was our “Social Meeting” so we looked forward to a fun afternoon.

President Norma Sherrer welcomed all and read the poem “Thanksgiving Greetings” Twas the night of thanksgiving. But I just couldn’t sleep. I tried counting backwards. I tried counting sheep. The leftovers beckoned. The dark meat and white. But I fought the temptation with all of my might. Tossing and turning with anticipation. The thought of a snack became infatuation. So I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore. Gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes, Pickles and carrots beans and tomatoes. I felt myself swelling, so plump and round ‘Til all of a sudden I rose off the ground. I crashed through the ceiling floating into the sky With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie. But, I managed to yell as I soared passed the trees. HAPPY EATING TO ALLPASS THE CRANBERRY PLEASE. May your stuffing be tasty. May your turkey be plump. May your potatoes ‘n gravy have nary a lump May your yams be delicious, May your pies take the prize May your thanksgiving dinner stay off of your thighs. HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL.

Following the Mary Stewart Collect, Salute to the Flag and “O Canada, “Happy Birthday was sung to Rose Highfield (1st), Dawn Larin (12th) Isabel Sutherland (21st), Pat Laflamme (27th) and Norma Sherrer (28th)

The Motto for the month was “The leaves change, the wind blows and the country slowly changes from summer cottons to winter wools” and the Roll Call “Bring non-perishable food for the food bank and a card for a veteran.

Secretary Elizabeth Milroy read the Minutes of the September Meeting, which were accepted as read. Business arising from the said Minutes was the Craft Sale in Emmanuel United Church on October 28th and for volunteers to work, either at the sale table or in the kitchen.

Correspondence - Elizabeth Milroy received a lovely letter from Cathleen Thurston, President of Alberta Women’s Institute for a wall hanging, which she sent to them. It was raffled off with the proceeds going to Waypoint Community Services. The hanging is in the Women’s Shelter in Fort Mcmurray. Congratulation Elizabeth.

As usual June Lemay had a joke to tell before her Financial Report “A very wealthy Arab’s son became very ill and needed a blood transfusion of a very rare type of blood. They finally found a man in Scotland who had it and was willing to provide some. The son got well and the Scotsman was sent many gifts, an expensive car, jewellery and money. Many years later, the son got sick again and needed another transfusion, which the Scotsman provided again. He received a lovely letter of thanks with a box of chocolates. Surprised he asked why the difference with the gifts between the first and second donations. He received this reply. “I’m sorry to say, that since my son received your blood, he has become very cautious about how he spends his money” The financial report was accepted as read.

June Lamey presented an interesting report of the Semi- Annual County Meeting.

New Business - Christmas Meeting on December 6. Decision was made re place and catering/ A meeting to prepare the program for 2018 will be held at June Lamey’s home on October 10th at 1:00 p.m. and the Branch will be presenting a wreath on November 11 at the cenotaph.

There being no further business, the meeting was closed with the Grace and the members proceeded to the table covered with a delicious display of a “Pot Luck Lunch.” Following the lunch, the members gathered in a circle and two gifts beautifully wrapped were presented to us along with a pair of oven mitts. Like musical; chairs music was played and whoever had the gift when it stopped had to start unwrapping it wearing the mitts (no easy job). This continued for some time because as one gift was unwrapped another one was found inside. At the end, the person with the gift was the winner. Paulette Mahammah and Elizabeth Milroy were the lucky winners.

Soon it was time to say “Goodbye” and start home enjoying the beautiful weather that we are having.

Until next time.
