Citadins complete home-and-home sweep over Gaiters

-

A19-2 run to start the third quarter propelled the UQAM Citadins to a 74-67 victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters on Sunday afternoon in Lennoxville in RSEQ University women’s basketball.

The Citadins were led by Jessica Lubin who tallied a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Sarah Cabana scored 13 points, Roxanne Douaire 12 and Clara Blachier 11 to round out UQAM players in double figures.

For the Gaiters Edith Noblecilla scored 19 while Mara Marchizotti added 14 and rookie Marie-evrardine Berrouette picked up a double-double of her own with 11 points and 14 rebounds, including six at the offensive end. Maude Archambault came off the bench and scored 14 in the losing cause.

It was a 1 p.m. start time, a make-up game after Saturday night’s scheduled time was postponed due to weather. The slow start saw the visitors grab an 18-15 lead. Bishop’s responded in the second stanza with pressure defence that caused issues for the Citadins and outscored their foes 20-15 for a 35-33 halftime lead.

Bishop’s did not have an answer in the third when Lubin took over offensively and led UQAM on their run. They eventually won the frame 25-11 and never looked back. Bishop’s was resilient in the fourth but could not get closer than three points and the Citadins hung on for the 74-67 victory.

“We lost a ton of individual battles,” said Gaiters head coach Craig Norman. “Early on in both halves we shied away from the physical play. It’s a lesson learned. We have to learn to battle for 40 minutes and not just stretches of time. We had some great team play at certain points and in the fourth quarter, we made a valiant effort to get back in the game but we dug ourselves too big of a hole.”

The loss drops Bishop’s to 2-5 while UQAM improves to 2-6 after beating the Gaiters twice this week. No. 2 Mcgill continues to be the class of the league at 71, while No. 8 Concordia (3-3) and No. 5 Laval (3-2) chase them.

Next up Bishop’s plays a home-andhome with Concordia. Game one is in Montreal on Thursday night at 6 p.m. with the back end set for Saturday at 6 p.m. in Lennoxvile.
