Activities at the Richmond Legion

- By Claudia Villemaire

Entertainment programs is just one of the ways members at Richmond's Branch 15 of the Royal Canadian Legion find to raise funds to help in projects that either maintain or repair their two storey building, a structure over one hundred years old and formerly a church built entirely of brick produced right in Richmond.

Willett, now retired from his Montreal work place and settled here, is enthusiastic about the program he continues to enlarge including Crib tournaments, card parties and especially the Sunday brunch once a month.

"But we're thinking up ways to bring back music and dancing more often too. So coming up this Sunday, February 25, Normand Menard, well known musician locally will bring his friends to a Jamboree with a Karaoke on hand for anyone wanting to take a turn at singing. Everyone is welcome and simply a donation would be welcome. The hall will be filled with folks, many wearing something green, attending the Green Auction, Saturday, March 3, where every item is linked to the Irish heritage here. Long tables loaded with a wide variety of items including Irish, homemade food items, plants and clothing, what-nots and thing-amajigs makes this event one of the most popular during the month of Irish festivities. Admission here is $4 and the fun begins at 1:30 p.m.

But there's no stopping Willett's penchat for organizing fun things to do. Sunday, March 18, after the parade, Sam Morrissey and the group Memories will be tuning up by 2:30 p.m. with country music and Irish songs. There'll also be door prizes and snacks and admission, once again, is simply a donation.

The traditional Irish banquet is back on the program this year with a new theme. A Medieval style menu with young folk performing songs, dances and poetry among the dinners will bring a fresh look at the link to the Irish settlers in this region over one hundred years ago. We'll have more on this story next week. The Banquet is scheduled for March 10th and will be held at the Legion Hall, corner of College and Carpenter streets, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
