Obituary

- Russell Nichols 1931 – 2018

Russell passed away peacefully at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Sherbrooke on January 25, 2018, at the age of 86, with his good friend, Curtis Patterson, by his side.

He was born in Compton, elder son of Nelson Nichols and his wife Jessie Johnson.

Russell attended the French school in Compton for a few years, and then attended Lennoxville High School.

He helped out on the family farm, milking cows, sugaring, haying, etc.

In 1957, he married Sue Mcharg and they settled down in Compton where they raised four children.

Russell’s interests included farming, gardening, working in the woods, genealogy and old cars. He enjoyed country music, dancing and playing cards. He loved animals and birds.

Russell drove school bus for 41 years.

He wasn’t afraid of hard work, and he and several others raised funds for St. James Church in Compton. Also, he and many others cleaned and restored several old, abandoned cemeteries in this area.

In 1992, Russell and Sue started the Compton Historical Society, which is still going after all these years, although attendance is often small.

Russell was a quiet man, never showing emotion, but we knew that his wife, family and friends meant a lot to him.

He leaves to mourn his wife Sue; his children Janet (Patrick Molony), Jim (Sue Kelso), Kathy (Lance Bowen) and Richard (Dianne Luce); also many grandchildren, great-grandchildren; his brother Robert, sister-in-law Beverley, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visiting hours were held at Charron et Fils Funeral Home (Coaticook) on January 30, followed by the funeral service at St. Stephen’s Church, Coaticook.

Interment will take place at a later date. NICHOLS – We wish to thank everyone who helped in any way at the time of Russell’s death. Many thanks to the kind, caring nurses and doctors at Hotel Dieu Hospital in Sherbrooke. Thanks to all the ministers and others who took part in the funeral service, and special thanks to the bearers. Thank you for the food, flowers, phone calls and the many cards and letters.
