Elementary school in Sherbrooke shopping for a ‘green roof ’

- Record Staff

On April 12, Sherbrooke’s ‘Écollectif school initiated a crowdfunding campaign to develop a green roof project within the school. By end of their campaign, the students had reached over 214 per cent of their goal, an impressive feat for the young students.

The roof adjacent to the elementary school’s 3rd Cycle classroom provides excessive heat in summer. After researching global warming, the students learned that green roofs reduce ‘heat islands’ in the city. Then began planning to change part of their school's existing roof into a green roof where they could grow fruit and vegetables for their snacks.

In order to achieve their goals, the young entrepreneurs needed to raise $1,000 to add to the $500 already raised in order to conduct a feasibility study by an architectural firm. This study will determine if the current roof meets the requirements to accommodate the project. This study is the first step to assess the project’s future human, financial and material resources.

The campaign is far from over. The additional funds raised will be used for the next phases of the project which will be highly educational for the young Sherbrookers.

The Écollectif is a green school that has been working to protect the environment for several years. This green roof project is part of the institution's values, of which awareness of nature and the encouragement of student initiatives are distinctive elements.
