City goes big for Drowning Prevention Week

As part of National Drowning Prevention Week, Sunday, July 15 to Saturday, July 21, the City of Sherbrooke will be offering prevention and education activities at its twelve outdoor swimming pools and its two municipal beaches. These activities are aimed at educating the population, particular­ly young people, about safe swimming in recreation­al water.

The mascot “Didi the PFD” (for personal flotation device) will tour outdoor pools and public beaches to provide informatio­n on the safe use of a life jacket. In addition to those visits and in order to present the various monitoring tools and techniques, the program includes the following theme days:

Demonstrat­ions of various rescue situations

Discoverin­g the first aid kit Young lifeguards - monitoring techniques and tools

· Initiation to rescue

The Marathon of lengths

All outdoor pools will have the same schedule:

Monday, July 16 to Saturday, July 21, in the afternoon - Marathon of lengths

Tuesday, July 17, in the afternoon Discoverin­g the first aid kit;

Wednesday, July 18, in the afternoon Young lifeguard day

Thursday, July 19, at 2 p.m. Simulation of a case of a spinal injury;

Friday, July 20, in the afternoon Initiation to rescue

A surprise visit from the mascot “Didi the PFD” will take place in the afternoon - - from Monday, July 16 to Wednesday, July 19, depending on the pool.

City of Sherbrooke lifeguards are inviting everyone to take part in these activities in order to fully and safely enjoy the pleasures of recreation­al swimming.
