Sherbrooke man arrested for attacking random strangers
An individual who assaulted eight strangers crossing the street in Sherbrooke in less than twelve hours, apparently for no reason, has been sent for psychiatric evaluation.
One of the victims is still in the hospital after having been kicked and punched on the face last Tuesday at the corner of Wellington South and Sanborn Streets in Sherbrooke.
With regard to this victim, Jonathan Jetté-guillemette was charged with aggravated assault, although he also faces charges of simple assault on four others as well as uttering death threats, burglary, and assault causing injury.
Complaints about the 36-year-old began to accumulate overnight Monday to Tuesday and, patrol officers were sent to find the suspect, who turned out to be well-known to police for mental health problems.
The alleged incidents took place between 3:00 a.m. and the time of arrest at 1:15 p.m. on Bowen Street after randomly hitting strangers he met in the street.
This operation mobilized several patrol cars, investigators and forensic identification technicians to collect the evidence.
Since the beginning of 2018, the Sherbrooke police have opened 669 mental health cases. This is an increase of 43 percent on average over the last three years.
