Magog responds to downtown fire

- Record Staff

Following the devastating fire on Principale St. in Magog on Tuesday, the City of Magog released the following information on developments in the recovery phase currently underway.

Obstruction to traffic

Principale St. is still closed between Sherbrooke and Sainte-catherine streets because of restoration and cleaning work that must be done to secure the site. This closure is effective until further notice.

Environment

In order to prevent fire residue from reaching the Magog River, the City's Environmental Division quickly installed flumes to absorb petroleum products and a floating boom to retain debris at the edge of the river, at the rainwater network outlet.

Authorization of some repair work without a permit

The Town will authorize certain

emergency repairs on buildings located between 1 and 176 Principale St., which were damaged by the fire, without the need for a permit or a certificate from the City. Eleven buildings will benefit from this measure, which is in effect until July 15, 2019, and will speed up work following the incident. Before doing any work, owners concerned must contact an inspector by calling 819 8433333, in order to get all the necessary information. Those concerned will be contacted in the next few days.
