Transforming trash into Estrie Aide treasures

- By Emilie Hackett Special to the Record

Estrie Aide will be hosting its fourth annual edition of the “Garbage Art” event on Friday, Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in a series of activities that combine art and recycling.

“Garbage Art is a playful approach that allows us to showcase our work and heighten awareness towards the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling,” explained Angela Sukic, Estrie Aide’s Communications Officer.

Every year, Estrie Aide invites local artists to its headquarters at 345, South Wellington Street, where they will select and transform recycled furniture pieces on site. Jessica Chabot, Stephane Verreault, Jacob Audet, and Guy Lapierre will be this year’s invited artists.

These live art performances will encourage the artists to showcase their creative skills, which range from graffitiing, tattooing, mural art, illustrating, and designing. The transformed pieces, which combine art and functionality, will subsequently be available for purchase.

To conclude the event, the Estrie Aide employees will be caroling at 4 p.m.

“Our team works incredibly hard to reduce our environmental impact and carbon footprint all year round by promoting reusing and upcycling,” added Sukic. “In 2017, we were able to save around 2,000 tonnes of residual waste from heading to landfills.” Estrie Aide collects, sorts, repairs, and cleans millions of items every year. These items are repurposed and sold at a low price to provide Sherbrooke’s people in need with the essentials.
