Online consultation regarding school fees

Sherbrooke Record - - LOCAL NEWS -

Following the class action suit that resulted in school boards paying out over $153 million, The Minister of Education is working on a bill setting clear guidelines for the fees charged to parents in the public school system. Members of the public are invited to participate in an online consultation process, the results of which will be taken into consideration as the new bill is drafted.

The settlement agreed to last year does not cover the 2019-2020 school year. To avoid another potential class action, the ministry would like to table the new bill this winter so that it can pass and enter into effect for the coming school year.

In December, the Minister of Education met with school board federations, unions and parent committee federations to get their input on the subject.

Parents, teachers, school staff, taxpayers and all those interested in the issue have until Jan.25 to share their opinion regarding school fees.

The consultation can be accesses online at the following address: http://www.education.gouv.qc.ca/en/parents-and-guardians/references/consultation-on-school-fees/.

The questionnaire takes about ten to fifteen minutes to complete.
