A Hardbop start to the New Year with Montreal Hard Bop 5 in Bandeen Hall
Led by double bassist Frédéric Grenier, Montreal Hard Bop 5 returns to Bishop’s University to present music from its fifth and latest recording Case No. 5, on Friday, January 18 at 8 pm in Bandeen Hall to launch the winter portion of the Musique Chez Nous Series. A second performance is scheduled on Saturday, January 19 at 7:30 pm in Stanstead at the Neverwas Church as part of a new music series presented by the Centre des arts de Stanstead.
Founded in 2011, the Montreal-based quintet ensures the performance and creation of harp bop compositions while adding a modern twist and a new sound. An ensemble of well-respected musicians who have toured Quebec and Canada extensively throughout the years joins bandleader Frédéric Grenier: David Carbonneau (trumpet), Jonathan Cayer (piano), Alain Bourgeois (drums) and Cameron Wallis (saxophone).
Following their initial performance at the Montreal Jazz Festival, MTL HB 5 was encouraged by the positive reception of the audience and by their own enthusiasm. Very soon, more projects began to emerge. In 2012, they launched a promotional album, which offered audiences some great classics of hard bop masters such as Horace Silver, Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley alongside some original pieces.
